There are 9 type of servers each with a purpose of doing one type of thing. They range from application server that serves websites to Internet user, to mail servers that process and store your email. Here is the full list:

Application servers

Also known as middleware, this server takes an ample space of computing between end-user and territory servers and connects the two. This server connects software to clients via virtual server links. The servers can conveniently store a large application server of application data to several users at a go, hence perfect for businesses. An example is java tomcat.

Gaming server

This is a server that is the authentic source of matches in a multiplayer video play. It gives the most accessible way of delivering a seamless gaming experience for gamers around the globe. An example is fortnite.

Web Server

This server is used for obtaining access to the world wide web via public domain software. They connect stored information from internet websites to user computers. Apache and nginx are examples and here are some more.

Virtual server

A virtual server imitates the workability of a physical server. It shares the software and hardware resources with other operating systems and behaves like an actual server running software. Aka VSI, they are smaller and run on a larger hypervisor with many virtualized.

File server

This server saves information files for several users. They ran faster data retrieval, writing, or holding of files to a PC. This server is common in companies where several users want access to files saved on a server.

Dedicated server

A dedicated server is a physical gadget stored in a data center and only available to one customer. In other words, it is a type of cloud service whereby a user rents a physical device from a provider with no other tenants or users. A dedicated box has many cpu and lots of memory and disk space.

FTP servers

The File Transfer Protocol helps the transfer of files between computers securely by controlling the process.

Database Server

A database server is both hardware and software that helps in managing and storing databases. As hardware, a database server is a dedicated high-end computer that hosts the database. As software, it's the backend option of a database application. This is also referred to as the database instance.

Database servers help to keep data in a central location making it easy to back up. Users and applications can centrally access the data via a network or the internet.

The database is always independent of the database architecture.

Mail server

This is a server that supports the transfer and storage of mails through the internet. The most mail networks used here are WANs and LANs. You get your email by connecting to this type.

Proxy server

This server is found between the external server and client program (the web browsing) and controls or filters all requests. As well, the purpose of this server is to support the connections and improve performance. Nginx is an example.

Media server

This is a computer server whose function is to store digital media and avail it in the network. The media server deals with videos, photos, and other medical files. Gluster makes a good file system.

Client network

In terms of server services, this network has one server purposed to serve other clients' workstations. Although you may own multiple servers in these client/server networks, they will not work as workstations.

Here, a single workstation is assigned to serve a client. This means the interconnection of the computer server and the client's computer. Each party here relies on the other. Mostly, peer-to-peer networks are used to serve homes and small offices.

Specialized networks/ Servers

Under these networks, servers here are proposed to hold databases for web and blog domains. They supply access to all websites. Email accounts, DNS are some of the accounts that operate under specialized networks and servers.

What are servers

A server is a larger data processing and storage device that exists either as a virtual storehouse located on the internet or as hardware. Software or computer systems act as servers that connect to a network. A server can also be any device that saves and shares information; they store and process information within their system or request it from another system. Servers started as small gadgets to convey data to a more functional PC; they grew larger and more complex. Currently, servers exist implicitly within cloud computing sites that are stored on the internet.

A datacenter simply is a special area or server room designed to store a large amount of data. In other words, the data center is a service store and is associated with supporting computing hardware of any size. The design of the data center is according to the purpose and scale of the servers.

How they work

Servers function in various ways to connect users to reoccurring data functions. They store massive data amounts for companies and make it available to users via the internet or internet networks. They respond to user commands to recover proper files from interconnected or stored data sources. Computer experts can boost the functionality of a server by installing software that creates additional roles like responding to website inquiries from an internet browser. Servers also function as guards to confirm the identification of users before letting them access a system.

What is the purpose of a server?
The work of a computer server is to build a network between the computer and 'clients' computers' or call them 'other workstations.’ The server is there to help the clients using their computers to reach out to information provided by the server in a specific network. Therefore, the server is purposed to store large information and supply it to many workstations according to requests.

But to get in deep a big, the type of network supporting the server affects how the server will function. This is to say; the server interacts differently with different types of networks. For example, here are three types of networks; let’s see how the server interacts with each and its purpose in such networks.

The server is all that helps the computer user get the information that they need. It plays an important role in storing, availing, and transferring information or data across networks. With several types of servers, computer users can get different network services but served by different servers. This is to means every kind of server has its purpose on various networks.
