Nortel (www.Nortel.com) and QUALCOMM have successfully completed HSDPA calls with a category 6 handset using 16 QAM modulation and reaching 3.6Mbps data rate over the air interface.
The companies completed an initial series of mobile data calls using test terminals based on QUALCOMM's Mobile Station Modem (MSM) MSM6280 solution and commercial HSDPA network equipment from Nortel. The tests achieved ftp downloads at speeds that are faster than the majority of fixed broadband connections.
Jean-Luc Jezouin, vice-president for GSM/UMTS product line management at Nortel, said broadband technologies such as HSDPA are designed to help operators squeeze the most out of their existing Nortel UMTS infrastructure investments while enhancing the end user experience.
Nortel achieved the industry's first HSDPA mobile call in January.
Nortel and LGE completed the first live test calls using a commercial handset solution for HSDPA in March. In June, Nortel became the first wireless network supplier to complete the TL9000 registration standard for Quality Management System Requirements and Measurements across its HSDPA, UMTS and GSM wireless infrastructure solutions. Nortel has worked with a number of wireless operators on HSDPA trials and deployments in 2005.
